Thessaloniki Festival: Symbolic screening without spectators at the Olympion

On the opening day of the 61st Festival, we would all meet together at the Olympion. But conditions with the pandemic changed our plans. That’s why we decided to bring the room to life and show the opening film, behind closed doors, without spectators, in a symbolic movement, a moving moment that reunites us from our homes, wherever we are. On Thursday 5 November, at 19.00, at the time when every spectator was looking to find his place in the hall, the lights of the Olympion were turned on again, the projection camera was put into operation and the 61st Thessaloniki Film Festival began its symbolic screening. We wanted to show our love and devotion to the cinema that is going through difficult times. For all of us who were not there, the opening screen of the 61st edition, The Whale’s Journey, began to play on the big screen. The film will be released in cinemas by StraDa Films. The film, directed by Philip Yuriyev, which was available online on Thursday through the Festival’s online platform, is a human story of another life dreams. In the Bering Strait, in a whaling village, 15-year-old Leska falls in love with a girl from Detroit. When he finds his “beloved” talking to someone else, blurred by jealousy, Leska begins an unthinkable odyssey. At the symbolic point where the past and the future merge, this tender story of adulthood echoes the turmoil of youth and the pulse of first love. The opening film was preceded by an original video, with the slogan “Cinema in every way – Festival in every way”. The Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, the Regional Governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas, greet the opening video, while the people of the Festival wish that you may not see them every day due to See the greetings and wishes for the 61st Festival in the video that follows: Also at the beginning of the Festival was shown another video, in which Dimitris Fraggakis, general secretary of EOT addressed a greeting.
