“The road again”: The new poetry collection of Tito Patrikios



More than sixty-five years of relentless poetic activity have been completed by Titos Patrikios, who is now returning to the publishing news with a new collection, entitled “The road again” (recently released by Kichli) Published by his youth in Left (with whose leadership he would later disagree in various ways), Patrikios, born in 1928, began writing poetry from the exile camps where he found himself shortly after the end of the Civil War, and then in Paris in the 1960s. where he later went to continue his studies. And if in his first books the poet dealt with the passions of politics and history, which were flesh of his flesh (he experienced them in his own skin), he will soon be able to get away from them in order to turn to more inland areas, to places where the leading role is claimed by love. Erotic poems, of course, Patrikios will never stop writing, changing, of course, with the passage of time, the style and the architecture of his expression. Thus, from the rhyming tones that will prevail during his youth , with a mixed feeling of frustration and resentment lurking behind almost every word, Patrick passes, maturing, in a realistic and at the same time thoughtful landscape, but flooded with smells and colors: smells and colors that will continue to d in love a unique force of rejuvenation and exaltation. Love, although only on the mnemonic level, is not missing from his recent book, which consists of eleven poems, written during the quarantine of last spring. And while the days of quarantine have begun again, Patrikios wants to accompany us with poems that speak not so much about love as about the daily life of a poet who on the one hand recalls his former rebellious self (the title of today’s collection refers to the “Dirt Road” of 1954, his first book of poetry) while on the other it raises a number of issues of mature age, which summarize a settled philosophy of life – issues such as the struggle between truth and falsehood, the awareness that no end it is not final and that everything can proceed from the beginning at any time, the clash of light with darkness, the constant worry of death (without degrading any vital resource), the erotic memory and the memory of love (both grow stronger as the sense of absence of the other is strengthened), the expectation of the journey and the escape, the belief in what is to come, but also the recollection of the moments of happiness χίας. This fan is opened before us by the poet, who based on his many years of experience and long experience, sends the message, as we have already seen, that everything can (like a law of nature or an inalienable rule of life) be based on a new starting point: whatever we say, whatever we do, whatever we silently or loudly recite some other young children still live the same thousand words of suffering the same unexpected joys, they will try to open new paths, but starting from one that does not It is very different from ours, sometimes changing, sometimes suffering, sometimes beautifying life with a thousand faces, life unique of ours and of others. Extremely short, extremely dense, and with the power offered by the depth of the epigram (something like essays that breathe with the freedom of poetry or as poems that produce the analytical essence of the essay), Patrick’s verses are more than a legacy, offering a lively and at the same time a whispered (like confession) conversation with the reader of every era and every generation about the difficulties, but also about the possibilities and the future of everyday reality. As the poet himself said some time ago, in an interview he gave to APE-MPE for his poetry collection “Poetry finds you” (the book from which the topic for the course of Modern Greek Language and Literature in the Panhellenic Examinations was chosen this year): “Poetry can be everything: life filter, fear of death, exercise power, a source of vanity, social mobilization, pure art, an antidote to loneliness, a way of isolating oneself from the community. I write not about the means used by poetry but about how it moves – about what it is able to offer us with its function . In order for poetry to exist, however, one must emancipate oneself from its dominance. And let me say in addition that I can not come to any certainty and no definitive conclusion.
