Despite the condemnation of Greece in the European Court and the measures that the country was forced to take, Lake Koronia is in immediate danger of a new ecological collapse, a new study finds. The solution can be given only with projects that will allow water renewal, is the conclusion that emerges. “The research was based on a set of results – physicochemical and biological parameters, satellite data and imaging – from March to September 2019 which do not leave much room for doubt as to the cause of the observed phenomena “says Maria Moustaka, professor of Hydroecology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the APE-MPE. “Extremely high values ​​of total and ammoniacal nitrogen, total phosphorus and pH were measured in brackish water,” said Dr. Moustaka, referring to fertilizers that end up in the lake and cause flooding. eutrophication: high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus favor plant overgrowth of plankton, which when it dies is degraded by microbes that consume oxygen. As a result, the water becomes anoxic and the fish die of suffocation. “The lake’s food web collapses from its base, phytoplankton, which is dominated by known toxic microorganisms,” says Dr. Moustaka. Shrinkage Until a few thousand years ago, and the neighboring lake Volvi were united in a large body of water that reached a depth of 110 meters. Later, the single lake began to shrink, leaving behind two smaller lakes. Despite the shrinkage, Koronia was until the 1970s the fifth largest in Greece and was an important source of catch. Since then, however, its area has been reduced from 45 thousand acres to just 10,000 acres. In 2013, the European Court of Justice sentenced Greece for shrinking and degrading the lake, which is protected by the Ramsar Convention. The Ministry of Environment then approved funds for torrent diversion projects in order to raise the level of Koronia. However, as it seems, no final solution was given. And as Dr. Moustaka explained, the cause of last year’s disaster was not only the drought. “The collapse of the food web does not reflect static phenomena related to the climate or accidental events that occurred in September or August 2019, because by the beginning of July we have completed a set of individual ecological processes that are the separate causes of mass death of animals. However, they all depend on poor water quality, “he explained. Problem visible from satellites The collapse of the ecosystem is evident from the increase in the zooplankton of the genus Daphniamagna, due to the lack of predation by fish. In fact, in the summer of 2019, the excessive growth of this microorganism, as recorded by satellites, showed the highest values ​​reported in the international literature. “In fact, the phenomenon has been repeated since 1995, raising intense concerns about understanding and managing the real state of a sensitive ecosystem.
