Almost 40 years ago, after a letter sent by Robert B. Weide to the iconic author Kurt Vonnegut asking for his permission to make a documentary, “Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time” will finally be released in the summer of 2021. For the time being, an official teaser of the film has been released. Robert B. Weide & Don Argott’s KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME is an intimate & moving portrait of one of the most beloved American writers, uniquely filmed over an unlikely decades-long friendship. Brimming with Vonnegut’s trademark wit, the film hits theaters Summer 2021! pic.twitter.com/OUzbE97vXn— IFC Films (@IFCFilms) November 11, 2020The film – directed by Don Argott – takes advantage of two decades of filming between 1988 and 2007, the year Bonegat died at the age of 84. According to APE, the long-awaited documentary chronicles the author’s life, from his childhood in Indianapolis to his time as a World War II prisoner, his personal life and his success as a writer in 1969 with its release of the novel “Slaughterhouse No. 5 (Slaughterhouse-Five).” In the 40-second teaser, we see correspondence between Bonegat and Weide, who became close friends. “I received your fax, and I can not go to this screening,” Bonegat tells him. “When I first approached Vonnegut in 1982 to approve this film, I envisioned a fairly conventional documentary about a writer,” Weide said in a statement. As the decades passed, fate intervened and what I found myself with is far from being conventional. As my friendship with my literary idol grew, the full revelation of the truth was required, and Don Argot came to record the “meta element” of this story as I continued to focus on Vonnegut’s biography. What we came up with in the end was a hybrid that combined our respective strengths as directors and which we hope Vonnegut fanatics will see as a worthy tribute and a non-initiation as a convincing introduction. “I am grateful that IFC Films is offering and bringing this project, which is a passion for life, to the public.” “We miss Vonnegut’s unique voice very much and I look forward to the public rediscovering its intelligence,” he added. for his part, Don Argott.
