Global distinction for student robotics team of Democritus University of Thrace

A great success was achieved by the DIR team, with Thracian (from Xanthi) students of the Democritus University of Thrace, which was ranked 6th in the largest world robotics competition held in Singapore. The beginning and the innovation It was the spring of 2018, when I see Evdokimos and Theo Andreas Kechagias, two students of the Polytechnic Department of Production Engineering and Management of DUTH, originally from Xanthi, decided to establish Democritus Industrial Robotics (DIR), a student group of industrial robotics with research work. Two years later and after several difficult years , DIR represents Xanthi, Thrace and the whole country in the world and internationally renowned RoboCup Asia – Pacific 2020 competition held online by Singapore due to the pandemic that plagues the world. Presenting its innovative and costly project to the committee manages to nominate a prototype robot in the competition. The robotic platform which is quite different from the anthropomorphic image that most citizens have in mind, is able to move autonomously in space. The original robot: an innovative and costly project. Students have given it this opportunity, with the robot being able to locates in the specially designed track that have also been built by the students of Democritus University objects that are placed in the wrong position. Puts the objects in their place. With the appropriate improvements and upgrades, the robot is able to collect these objects through a pioneering The result left a very positive impression on participants and organizers, giving DIR more points than any other team in the world in terms of Presentation. Thus, the 6th place in its Work category competition where the team participated was one way because the members of the team attending the Polytechnic Schools of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Production and Management Engineering, Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering were not content to simply bring DIR to the position of being the only emerging team that managed to present its work in the competition after the obstacles posed by COVID-19, but also to present something remarkable. The offer of the local community It would not be an exaggeration to admit that with the main form of the robot ready, enough time for modifications and grants from the Visiting Fellows of the competition, a program that provides DIR with its expenses for the next competition, the future for the robotic team of the city of Xanthi looks bright. The contribution of the local society and economy to the students’ work is great, offering them knowledge, materials and money to build the robot. Or, if you will, let them keep dreaming!
